PEERS™ is a clinical and research tool that comprehensively assesses social skills (across the attention/executive function, communication and social cognition domains) and identifies social problems in children and adolescents (aged 6-20). Social problems are a primary symptom of autism spectrum disorders and social communication disorders (i.e. ADHD, language and learning difficulties, speech and motor impairments, depression, anxiety). The PEERS assessment will lead to more accurate diagnosis of autism spectrum disorders and social communication disorders and inform early intervention measures and targeted treatment for those disorders.

PEERS is being trialled and age normed in schools in 2016. It will be made available to health professionals (psychologists, speech pathologists, paediatricians and special educators) for use in both the clinical and research settings in 2017. PEERS will be regulated as a medical device.

The PEERS project is being led by the Murdoch Childrens Research Institute in collaboration with an international team of child neuropsychologists.
